Katie Downey spent the first five years of her career as an associate at the Sutin, Thayer & Browne Law Firm, where she practiced primarily in the areas of commercial litigation, general litigation, commercial foreclosure, bankruptcy, and creditor’s rights. She primarily represented banking and financial institutions, local and national corporations, and educational institutions. She handled several contested matters in that role and served as first or second chair on litigation matters ranging from large, complex liability defense cases to smaller contested proceedings in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Mexico. She was the youngest attorney at the Sutin Firm to ever achieve the Martindale-Hubbel AV Preeminent rating, the highest rating for professional ethics and reputation. Katie has also practiced tribal law throughout New Mexico, most notably in the Navajo Nation. She has been recognized as a Super Lawyers 2018 Rising Star for her outstanding work in creditor and debtor rights law.
Katie graduated from the University of Colorado Law School in 2013, which she attended on a merit-based scholarship. She was the Vice President of Fundraising for the Public Interest Student Association and served as a student law clerk for the Boulder County Court. She holds her BA form the University of New Mexico where she graduated summa cum laude in 2007. Prior to law school, Katie worked for an Albuquerque nonprofit running multiple programs and assisting in community outreach and advocacy efforts for the benefit of the City’s homeless population.
Katie currently serves as the Treasurer for the Albuquerque Bar Association. She has performed extensive pro bono work throughout her career, including serving as pro bono guardian ad litem within the Navajo Nation court system for approximately three years.
